Labour DLP Policies for the ACT Election
“Supporting Families to Build Communities”
Making Housing Affordable
Buying
- Increase land supply by drastically expanding and fast-tracking land development to meet all demand.
- providing half price land to first home buyers by creating a register of first home buyers who are guaranteed to be offered a block within 12 months at a fixed price of $500 per square metre.
- In order to increase the supply of blocks for houses, repeal ALP-Greens government mandate requiring most land be developed for units
- Create a not-for-profit Co-operative Finance Bank to lend for the establishment of housing co-operatives, including single homes with at least four shareholders
Renting
- Increase rental supply by encouraging build-to-rent houses and units
- Impose a 30% Foreign Buyers Stamp Duty on all properties bought by foreign nationals (as is currently done by China) and an annual 5% long-term vacant property tax to finance building more social housing for Australians in the ACT.
Rent to Buy Social Housing
- Allow public housing tenants to use their last tens years rent as a deposit to purchase their social housing
Cutting the Cost of Living
Affordable Energy
- government to build a gas power plant to reduce household energy costs and guarantee affordable, reliable supply for all ACT residents.
- Repeal ALP-Greens ban on connecting gas to new homes
- Introduce traditional power rebates of $500 a year to low-income families and retirees without rooftop solar to compensate them for having to pay higher electricity costs to subsidise wealthy Canberrans who have solar cells.
Taxes and Charges
- Reduce government charges imposed on new land development,
- Reduce ACT rates from the highest in the country to no more than the average of the other states.
- Pass legislation to prevent government fees, rates and charges rising higher than CPI.
Supporting Families
- Introduce a $35,000 per year means-test free Homemakers Allowance paid to stay-at-home mums to look after their own children, payable irrespective of their husband’s income
- Introduce Low Income Family Rent Assistance of $100 per week
Improving Health Care
- Establish a Free State Dental Clinic to provide free basic dental care (scaling, fillings, extractions, false teeth) for low-income families and retirees
- Support the establishment of Private Hospital Accident & Emergency departments to end long Emergency waiting times
- Build a second major government hospital in north Canberra and return ownership of Calvary to the Catholic Church, giving Canberra three major hospitals to end waiting times for elective surgery.
- Cap the ratio of bureaucrats to doctors and nurses in public health to ensure that future health funding increases go to front-line services not just pen-pushers
Reducing Crime
- Following the example of the Country-Liberal Party government in the Northern Territory, reverse the ALP-Greens government’s raising of the age of criminal responsibility to 14 and bring it back down to 10 again.
- Build a Borstal Reform School to reform youth repeat offenders aged 10-17 (as occurred in the UK until 1982 and as currently occurs in India)
- Introduce mandatory jail terms for home invasion, car-jacking and all other serious violent crimes.
- Install security lighting at all bus stops and underpasses.
- Create a dedicated ACT Police service which actually bothers to patrol our streets to keep us safe.
- Introduce a zero-tolerance policy for graffiti, removing it within 30 days and forcing those responsible to clean it off.
- Repeal the ALP-Greens government’s permissive drug laws and punish illegal hard drug possession with compulsory detoxification. (Failure to comply to result in incarceration.)
Restoring Education
- End the politicization of public education by banning the teaching of radical race and gender material and climate change alarmism in public schools
- End all “welcome to country” ceremonies which presume that the country doesn’t belong to all of us, divide the community based on race and devalue the citizenship of migrants.
- replace WTC in schools with singing our Australian national anthem every morning to promote national unity
- Introduce education vouchers to give all kids equal public education funding and also make these payable to the parents of home-schooled kids
Improving Recreation
- Revamp existing stadium at Bruce and not build a traffic-jam generating new stadium in Civic
- Stop government reducing our public parks by using them as cheap government building sites
- Stop wasting millions on eyesore Labor-luvvy junk sculptures and replace them with worthwhile public art by actual artists, beginning with a bronze statue of penicillin-discoverer Sir Howard Florey at the Florey shops.
- Support freedom of choice by re-legalizing smoking in designated outdoor areas of pubs, clubs, hospitals etc.
- Abolish compulsory bicycle/scooter helmets for adults
- Bring back fireworks to celebrate the King’s birthday!
