In August 2021, the Federal Liberal government passed the so-called Electoral Legislation Amendment (Party Registration Integrity) Act 2021. This act tripled the minimum number of members required for political parties to register and gave exclusive rights to the words “liberal” and “labor” to the Liberal and Australian Labor parties respectively.
As a result of this legislation, after being in existence for 65 years, the DLP has been deregistered.
While we are currently appealing this decision, this anti-democratic action by the Morrison Government has resulted in our being unable to contest the 2022 Federal Election.
